Going to New Orleans?
Good! Go! The only thing you’ll regret about your visit is not staying longer…
Weather:
Generally, June through September it’s hot as hell.
October to May, it’s OK.
Is New Orleans safe?
Yes. New Orleans is no more dangerous than Miami, Phoenix or Los Angeles.
Stick to areas locals recommend and avoid the ones they avoid. At night, stay where there are people and, as in every big city, keep your eyes open. (Hey, we live in a lawless, violent country. If you want safety, visit Switzerland.)
Food:
Incomparable. You won’t find better on this continent or any other.
Here’s the most up-to-date list of what restaurants are open neighborhood by neighborhood with ratings.
Guides:
This is the best mass market guide book to the real New Orleans I’ve seen so far:
The Rough Guide to New Orleans by Samantha Cook. eBook version available too.
More has been written about New Orleans past and present than almost any other city in America. The more you know, the more you’ll enjoy your experience. And ask a native. The real city is in their hearts. They’ll tell you.
Culture:
“Beaten, not bowed.”
Katrina seriously battered New Orleans, but New Orleans culture is amazingly resilient as the post-Katrina music scene testifies. If you love live music, you come to New Orleans and hear for yourself.
Like no other place on earth.
More coming…
