Frenchman Street New Orleans

Friday, April 25th, 2008

In the spirit of “anything worth doing, is worth doing badly,” I got on my bicycle on a slow night on Frenchman Street and one-handed it with my $95 video camera.

Yes, it could be done a lot better. Consider it a rough sketch, a very rough sketch.

Treme Brass Band Lindy Hop

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

New Orleans may have more smoking good dancers per capita than any other place in America.

They sure have great bands to dance to. This is the Treme Brass Band at Ray’s Boom Boom Room on Frenchman.

Cell phone movies from New Orleans

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I should know better than going anywhere without my PureDigital video camera (about the size of a pack of cigarettes.)But I do have a rudimentary video camera on my cell phone that records up to 15 seconds.

Here’s the end of a drum solo by a young kid playing with the Treme Brass Band at Ray’s Boom Boom Room on Frenchman Street.

Here’s some clips from the 2007 Big Nine Social and Pleasure Club Second Line, my favorite parade of the year and maybe my favorite event in New Orleans period. (more…)

Satchmo JazzFest

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

If you like heat and great music, consider a visit to New Orleans this weekend for the annual Satchmo JazzFest.

“Satchmo” of course was the great Louis Armstrong, a native son of New Orleans whose genius helped make jazz “modern.” Even decades after his death, it’s hard to listen to his big sound and shimmering lines without getting chills.

The festival goes from August 2 to August 5th and features great music and programming for kids.

If I were in New Orleans, I’d be checking out my favorites the Soul Rebels and the Panorama Jazz Band on the 4th and Rebirth, Treme, Algier’s, Trombone Shorty and Kermit Ruffins on the 5th. Talk about an embarrassment of riches.

Lots of participatory music workshops for kids on both days plus a puppet show on Sunday.

Good stuff at the Old Historic US Mint at 400 Esplanade Avenue on the border between the French Quarter and the Faubourg Marigny.

Check it out.

A Whole New Orleans

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

Great idea. A TV travel series devoted to the wonders of Post-Katrina New Orleans. It’s called “A Whole New Orleans.”

New Orleans still is one of the greatest cities in the world to visit and live in. Glad to see someone using the power of produced TV to tell the story.

Rosie Ledet Zydeco New Orleans Rock ‘n Bowl

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Rosie Ledet rocks. If you have to put her in a category, she’s a Zydeco performer, but in terms of energy she feels like a female version of Prince or Jimi Hendrix - to me at least.

Here’s some video of a performance she gave at Mid-City Rock ‘n Bowl in New Orleans that I shot several months ago.

Rock ‘n Bowl New Orleans

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Rock ‘n Bowl, which is located in the Mid-City district of New Orleans, is one of the city’s most unique venues. Located on a second floor, it’s a combination bowling alley and dance hall.

All kinds of music are played there, but every Thursday is Zydeco night.

Here are two skilled dancers, moving to the music of Rosie Ledet.
